"GIS" stands for
"Geographical Information System" and refers to a
computer-based system for storing, analyzing, and displaying
maps and map information.
A regular map shows only
spatial data such as streets, roads, streams and bridges. In
effect a simple picture.
A geographic information
system (GIS) goes further by linking information about the
mapped objects to the mapped objects. For example,
addresses and street names can be linked to street segments.
This link creates "intelligent" map features and provides
the ability to analyze data, letting you use map data in a
whole new way.
After you have worked with the
map and the data to specify what you want to display, you
can print the current map view or copy it into another
document; With GIS data and functionality being made
available over the Internet, as we are in the process of
doing here at the
City of Russellville, the system is referred to as a "Web
GIS".
While the complete GIS program
is currently under construction, there is available, a
viewable city mapping system. In order to view these maps
you must download and install the Autodesk Design
Review plug-in. Using the free viewer you can view
the online maps.
If you are new to our mapping
system and have not downloaded the plug-in, please click on
the free Autodesk
logo on the right.
